Something strange is going on in the lands formally known as America's heartland. The Nation Weather Service and storm enthusiasts everywhere are looking for brave thrill-seekers to venture out into the Deadzone to gather data and glory. Amongst the mutated fauna rage intense storms that baffle the modern scientific establishment and border on paranormal. Will you help bring a shattered nation together by producing the largest storms in the history of the Earth?
Stormrunner (STORMRUN-R) is a Godot game made for the Godot Wild Jam 92. Load into the STORMRUN-R, the most advance mobile storm-brewing vehicle in the Deadzone. Traverse disaster-torn areas in search of precious sensor data. If things get too dire, safely extract at end of turn and live to tell the tale. Stay too long and become yet another victim of the Deadzone.
How To Play
On the planning screen, pre-select 3 movements for your next turn. The preview will show the path the storm van will follow. In addition to movement, you must select 3 storm attributes to brew with at the end of the turn. Attributes will cause storms to drop flood and fire zones and will spread existing zones. Navigate through the dangers to retrieve the 5 data sensors located on the map.
Storm behavior is somewhat random, if things get too out of hand, try again! Perhaps the Deadzone will favor you.
Storm Attributes
Every turn, you will select three (3) Storm Attribute cards. Each of these cards will affect the storm in various ways:
- Temperature (Fire): high temps cause fires to spread
- Humidity (Flood): increased humidity causes floods to spread
- Pressure (Fire & Flood): high pressure fronts spread fires and floods
- Wind: Increases the wind for next turn, potentially pushing storms in or out of your path
The played Storm Attribute cards will take affect after the movement is complete, and will set the map for the next turn. In addition to the affects listed above, storms will also drop new fires or floods on the map, depending on which attribute was higher (floods win tiebreakers).

Theme: Brewing
We approached the theme with the intent to avoid common associations with brewing (beer, tea and potions galore!) Our initial idea was more of a deck-building game where you would pre-plan (aka "brew") your turn. Some of these ideas made it into the final release, as you will pre-plot your movements before heading into the storm. Once we decided on a storm-brewing mechanic, we tried to go for a high-risk, high-reward type gameplay where the player was rewarded for creating huge storms and making a map full of dangers. Though we weren't able to implement many of the mechanics we envisioned, the core elements of gameplay came together.
Unfinished Mechanics and Features
We left a lot of meat on the bone with this one. Here are some of the features we were aiming to have but couldn't quite finish in time:
- Obstacle tiles on the map
- Wind Attribute (Wind was designed to push you at the end of movement)
- Multiple levels
- Interactions/Events in the 3D portion:
- Reactions to storms, floods and fires
- Events that played when exploring certain areas of the maps
- Ability to deploy storms during movement
- Radio interactions with lore bits (for the vibes)
During the jam week, we'll be working on adding a few of these as well as fixing bugs for a post-jam build.
